7 Journaling Prompts That Helped Me Reset My Life

veteran journaling

1. What areas of my life feel out of control-and how have I contributed to that?

This was the first prompt that really hit me. I stopped blaming other people, stopped blaming the world-and finally admitted that I had a hand in the chaos around me. If you're honest here, you'll see where you're giving your power away.

2. If I don't make any changes... what does my life look like 6 months from now?

I remember journaling this while sitting in my car, hungover, wondering how I'd ended up there. That visual of my future if I kept playing small? That was the wake-up call I needed. Don't sugarcoat it. Be real about what 'no change' looks like.

3. What habits or people are keeping me in the same cycles I say I want to break?

At one point, I had to write down names. Habits. Environments. This one's not easy, but it gave me clarity. Who are you around when you feel most tempted to fall back? What routines are keeping you stuck?

4. What would it look like to actually take ownership today?

This question changed the game. Not 'someday,' not 'when life calms down.' But TODAY. I started small, cleaning up my space, hitting a workout, making that call I was avoiding. Ownership builds momentum.

5. What does 'discipline' mean for me now-without anyone telling me what to do?

For years, I mistook stress and chaos for discipline. It wasn't until I started rebuilding structure for myself that. I understood the difference. This is about setting your own standard and holding the line-even when no one's watching.

6. What emotion am I numbing-and what would happen if I actually sat with it?

This one got personal. I realized how much I used alcohol, distractions, and overworking to avoid the stuff underneath-shame, regret, fear. Sitting with it was uncomfortable... but it gave me peace I never had before.

7. Who do I want my kids, my friends, and my future self to remember me as?

I wrote this one on a night I felt like giving up. It reminded me that how I show up today is shaping how I'll be remembered. That's legacy. That's what helped me push through when nothing else did.
